rain and more rain

Every year come June me and my son are enjoying the ever changing rice fields. We always stop and have a look when we pass by, commenting on the water level, looking at all the little creatures living in the fields, talking about the rice field frogs that are soon to be born. Remembering my son from just a year ago, I cannot help feeling amazed about how much he has grown. The kindergarten uniforms that were quite a bit on the big side, that we thought our son could wear until he graduated kindergarten, are suddenly getting on the tight side. The rain jacket we got from his cousins and that were several sizes to big is suddenly just perfect fit. Luckily his umbrella is still going strong and even mornings when the rain is pouring down he stops at the little ditch that transports the water from the ponds higher up to the rice fields, hunkers down under his umbrella and looks at the flowing water, trying to see som insect activity.

The past few weeks it has been raining more or less every day – the rainy season has come. Last week was ok, quite comfortable actually with temperatures around 25-27 degrees, but since then, the temperature reaches above 30 during the days and and combined with high humidity, life suddenly feels quite oppressive here. As long as you do not need to be so active outside it is bearable, but any physical movement results in sweaty clothes and a wish to have a coldish shower. And having a toddler inevitably means a lot of outdoor activity for a dad. On TV they warn about heatstroke and at kindergarten the kids are sometimes having a hard time in the heat – it is going to be a long summer, but I am sure we will find a lot of fun and cooling activities to do together.
