New week – new museum. This time we went on a road trip to Kitakyushu and the Museum of Natural History. Kitakyushu means northern Kyushu, and is a town situated in the north of our island Kyushu (a very logical name one might think), an hour’s drive away. We have gone to Kitakyushu a few times before but this was our first visit to the natural history museum and the dinosaur exhibit. Ever since our son got interested in dinosaurs we have been talking about going to this museum and now the time had finally come.

The museum is a real treasure, the displays both beautiful and exciting. And a little scary – there was a dinosaur landscape that was only accessible thorough a dark tunnel, and arriving there we were met by a light and sound show with a narrator telling us about what we were seeing all while big dinosaur figures were moving their heads and bodies, standing on boulders among big fake trees, making dinosaur roars. On the ceiling there was a night sky projected and the walls were showing a volcano landscape. It became a little bit too scary so we exited quickly and went to see the fossils instead.

It was an engaging day and I think we will come back again and see the exhibit with new eyes when our son gets a little bit older. And until then he got a bath dinosaur to play with at home. He calls it Nessie after hearing mum’s stories of the Loch Ness monster, and in our son’s mind there is no question that Nessie is a dinosaur.
