Here comes the alphabet rain, said my son one day when we were playing. It was raining outside and we had just finished a board game where you roll the dice and go around looking for letters that you need to create the words you have on the game tile in front of you. The letters are round cardboard cutouts and when your piece encounters a cutout you turn it over and the letter is revealed. This time my son won, actually he wins most of the time. He wants to win all the time but fortunately he has become better at accepting my occasional wins and even congratulates me from time to time. It was time to tidy up and put the game back into its box before getting ready for bed, but instead of easing down the letters into their plastic bag, my son stood up, folded the board and let all the letters fall down on the floor. Here comes the alphabet rain, he said happily.
He seems to have gotten inspired by his mischief. A few days later we were doing some paper crafts, folding pages from a booklet in which my son had been practicing his number skills, cutting out pieces of the folded sheets with a pair of scissors, and unfolding the sheets to see what patterns are revealed. Going through many sheets of paper resulted in a lot of small paper cutouts, and of course my son was very clear what to do with those. Here comes the paper rain.
After that we have had book rain, toy car rain, and even a little shoe rain in the entrance. Although we have had our serious discussions about whether or not making rain indoors like this is a good idea, I am happy to see that my little boy is creative and explores the world. And most of all I am happy that the LEGO rain has not started yet, but I guess it is just a matter of time before I stand in the middle of a sea of small pieces of LEGO.
