It was supposed to be a beautiful weekend, warm but not hot, clear skies and the air full of spring. Our son had got a pamphlet from his kindergarten about an event in a little seaside village where children’s activities as well as a chance to go for a ride on a boat were on the agenda. When we woke up we were met by a beautiful sky, but the trees outside was bending conspicuously in the wind and it was easy to imagine the sea being anything but calm. Our son was so looking forward to riding the boat, but when we came to the coast it was clear that going out on a boat was out of the question.

Fortunately he got to try to scope up rubber balls using a paper scope, a very popular attraction at Japanese events and festivals. You get a racket-like tool but instead of a net there is a paper that after a while when in contact with water will break so before it does you need to try to catch as many balls as you can. With a plastic bag full of balls and no boat trip in sight we decided to move on and ended up at our favorite beach. No matter the weather it is always a happy thing going there, running on the beach, playing in the sand, looking at the waves. This day the color of the sea was spectacularly beautifully turquoise. None of us wanted to go home but a little hungry stomach made itself known and we went home with new memories and more fondness than ever for our beach.
