During the school spring break we had dear visitors from Tokyo who used their little holiday to come and spend some days in Fukuoka with us. It was such a happy occasion and our son was thrilled to spend time playing with his older friends. The difficult thing with being the youngest though, is not being able to participate in all the fun things older kids get to do. Fortunately, there are exciting things to experience for young toddlers as well.
Monday was a beautiful spring day, probably the peak of the sakura blossom and our drive to nearby Saga prefecture and the forest adventure activity park gave us so much sakura splendor that we could not have hoped for more. We came to this place two years ago and then my son was too young to take part in any activities. This time, he was tall enough to be able to do the kids course, so while his friends and their dad went to the adventure course high high up in the trees, my son and I spent our time doing the kids course, no fear at all, climbing and balancing and zip-lining until he was so tired he wanted me to carry him.
We finished first so instead of having a snack while waiting, we made our way through the woods to where the others were zip-lining tens of meters up between the trees. When my son saw his friends up in the trees he became so distressed that he could not join them. I tried to tell him that he is too young and short. Next time we can join I said, but he did not want to hear any of that, insisting he could very well do it despite bing short. And I could not help but thinking that his courage must come from my brave wife.
Tomorrow is the first day of the new school year and kindergarten starts again. And even though the playground at his kindergarten might not be as exciting as an adventure course, I am sure my son will be so happy to see and play with his friends again.
