Typically October is a month with beautiful weather, blue skies and comfortable temperatures, in short weather perfect for hiking. Every year the community society where we live organize a hike up the nearest mountain in the end of October and just like last year we joined the group. Early morning we met at the local playground and when everyone was gathered and gloves were distributed, we started our hike towards the mountain. Unlike last year, when our son was still small enough to be able to ride in my backpack, this year we brought his little kick bike instead and he road it to the foot of the mountain. There we parked it and headed straight up, like ants following each other in a long line.
Our son was his usual energetic self and not until half the way up he wanted to ride a bit on my back. But as soon as we came to the part where ropes are needed to scale the slope, he wanted to put on his gloves and do it by himself as much as possible. On the way up we were met with both rain and beautiful views, and at the top we were awarded a coffee break before heading down again just as the sun came out behind the rain clouds.
Back at the playground, when everyone was accounted for, the little group headed for the community building where a nice barbecue followed. It was a very happy day to welcome autumn and I look forward to many more mountain excursions this winter.
