Summer holidays – many of the most fond memories I have from my childhood are from warm summer days meeting people I loved doing things I enjoyed in places I came to adore. And now, I am so fortunate as to be able to see my son making precious memories for himself. Like Friday morning, when we went to the beach to meet and play with a friend of his. My son and his friend splashed around in the water’s edge, dug holes in the sand, found seaweed and beautiful stones, and shared a snack in the shade. It turned out to be a wonderful day with lots of laughter and play.

Summer holidays also has meant the chance to have an intensive week at the pool. Like last year, I applied our son to summer swimming school at a nearby swimming club, and seeing him in the pool this year was seeing a boy who has grown up a lot, no fear of putting his head under the water and with the biggest smile in the whole building on his face all the time. He really loves the water play and proudly tells everyone he has been to swimming school. My plan for us this autumn is to sometimes go to the big municipal swimming pool together to play and practice. That will also be lots of fun, but until then we are going to enjoy family evenings at our favorite Itoshima beach playing in the sea – after all that is what is the best thing about summer in Fukuoka.
